Carol Carrara has made HUNDREDS of teddy bears and lap quilts for Hospice of Hope’s patients and families in recent years. One of Carol’s favorite pastimes is sewing, and a few years ago, David Wirth, a long-time Chaplain for Hospice of Hope, approached her and the "Blessing Bunch" at their church about making teddy bears. David said that sometimes it’s challenging to get patients and families to accept a visit from a hospice Chaplain so he utilizes the teddy bears as an “ice breaker” to connect with patients and family members.
One particular family was reluctant to receive a chaplain visit. They agreed for David to drop off a teddy bear for their grandson. The grandson’s eyes lit up upon receiving the bear! Many of the bears are held onto long after the patient passes, and they serve as a fond memory of their loved one. We are thankful for volunteers like Carol that help to enhance the work we do at Hospice of Hope. Teddy bears and lap quilts are comforting to individuals going through a life-limiting illness.
Yesterday Hospice of Hope representatives presented Carol with a plaque that reads: "Hospice of Hope thanks you for the work of your hands, the overflow of your heart, making visible the tender mercies of God."
Thank you, Carol!
