Maysville Community & Technical College along with Buffalo Trace Area Agency on Aging & Independent Living and Licking Valley Community Action Program will present the biannual Senior Seminar on May 31st from 9-2:30 p.m. on the Maysville campus.This year’s theme is Connect, Create & Contribute.
You must pre-register to attend this event by May 24th. The fee for the seminar including lunch is $7. The keynote speaker will be Maysville native Dr. David Blake, M.D., PSC Neurologist. Along with concurrent sessions we will offer FREE health screenings beginning at 8 a.m. to the first 30 people who call and schedule an appointment. The health screenings are being offered by Primary Plus, LEAP program.
During the first session we’ll offer a Senior Care Panel of Experts: How to Make Smart Decisions about your Care Options. This panel will include representatives from Hospice of Hope, Kenton Pointe Assisted Living, Hayswood Home Health, Buffalo Trace Area Agency on Aging & Independent Living, and Maysville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Dr. Craig Denham will moderate the session. Also during the first round of concurrent sessions John Klee, MCTC Faculty will take participants on a bus tour through Old Washington and downtown Maysville providing commentary on the historical sites and how local history fits into the broader history of the nation. This class is limited to 24 and will be filled on a first come first served basis. Rounding out session one, Write Your Life, with MCTC Director of Library Services Sonja Eads. Join Sonja as she leads discussion and assists you in recording significant life events. You’ll end up with a permanent record that you will enjoy composing and that your family will be thrilled to read and “pass down” for generations.
During Session II participants can choose from Floral Design with Carrie Taylor where participants will create a fresh, colorful bouquet with fragrant herbs and “feel good” florals, there is a limit of 15 for this class. Another option during this session is Senior Yoga with Lelia Brannen. In Senior Yoga you’ll learn breathing techniques along with simple and repetitive moves to keep the body flexible. Lelia will also talk about the many benefits of practicing yoga. Rounding up the second session is Wills, Living Wills, Power of Attorney with Sue Brammer, Attorney at Law, Royse, Zweigart, Kirk, Brammer & Caudill. The legal issues related to wills, living wills, power of attorney and guardianship can be confusing. This session is designed to eliminate the fears and answer the questions related to these issues.
In the Third session participants can choose from SHIP & Medicare Basics, in this session participants will be provided a refresher course regarding Medicare Basics and SHIP presented by Kimberly McKinniss, BSW, State Health Insurance Assistance Program Coordinator with Buffalo Trace Area Agency on Aging & Independent Living. Participants will also be provided a benefit explanation of their current insurance status if requested. Another option is Get Smart on Your Smart Phone with Chris Morris, MCTC IT. In this session participants will learn how to better communicate with their family and friends using their smart phone. If you would like to learn text messaging, receive and send photos, and surf the Web, Chris will walk you through step by step so you can achieve these tasks and more. Smartphones include the Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and Motorola Droid Razr to name a few. Floral Design, a repeat of the class offered during session two will also be offered during this session and finally, if you attended the 8 a.m. Health Screening, Kim Keef, PA-C will be passing out the results from those screenings and giving an overview on the results.
Lunch will be provided by Licking Valley Community Action Program. The day ends with a variety of door prizes provided by the numerous vendors in attendance. Contact the Workforce Solutions Department at 606-759-7141, ext. 66120 to register.
